On Thursday evening, Pinehurst welcomed internationally recognised speaker, author and resilience educator Jake Bailey for two powerful sessions with students and parents.

Earlier in the day, Jake spoke to students in Years 7 to 13, sharing the story of how his life changed when he was diagnosed with an aggressive form of cancer during his final year at school. Just a week after receiving the diagnosis, Jake delivered his now-famous graduation speech from a wheelchair, a moment that would go on to inspire millions of people around the world.

But Jake’s message was about much more than overcoming illness. His presentation focused on resilience, what it means, why it matters and, most importantly, how it can be developed.

Drawing on his studies in positive psychology and the experiences of thousands of people he has worked with around the world, Jake challenged students to think differently about setbacks, failure and adversity. He shared practical strategies from his latest book, The Comeback Code, including his “Four S” model of resilience:

  • Slow down – break challenges into smaller, more manageable steps.
  • Salvage – look for the lessons and opportunities that can emerge from difficult situations.
  • Streamline – reduce unnecessary stress and focus on what matters most.
  • Stand alongside – lean on the support of family, friends and communit

At 6 pm, Jake returned to Pinehurst to speak with parents about how they can help young people build confidence, navigate challenges and develop the resilience needed to thrive in an increasingly complex world.
Jake has a rare ability to connect with people of all ages. His authenticity, humour and practical approach captured the attention of both students and parents, leaving many reflecting on the importance of resilience, perspective and the role that strong relationships play in helping young people flourish.

As Jake writes in The Comeback Code, “resilience is not something people are simply born with. It is a skill that can be learned, strengthened and developed over time”.

We are grateful to Jake for sharing his experiences and insights with our community and for reminding us all that challenges, while never easy, can often become the experiences from which we grow the most.
