Pinehurst School Wins Rosemary O'Brien Cup

September 2010

Pinehurst School wins Rosemary O'Brien Cup, an all girls' Secondary Schools Hockey tournament, after winning a well deserved place in the final, helds on Friday 3 September at Lloyd Elsmore Park in Pakuranga, Auckland.

The competition was held over the week beginning 30 August, with Pinehurst getting off to a fantastic start and winning their first competition 14 nil.

Three 'pool game' victories saw Pinehurst gain a well deserved position in the tournament Quarter Finals. At full time, with the score locked at 2 all, they successfully won a nail-biting Penalty Stroke shootout, gaining a place in the semi final against Rotorua Girls’ High School.

After another satisfying semi-final victory, 3 nil, Pinehurst earned a well deserved place in the final against Nae Nae College.

A tough final, the Pinehurst team emerged from the break 1 nil down but levelled the score midway through the second half. As the final whistle loomed, a threat of another Penalty Shootout was on the cards but, with minutes to spare, Pinehurst scored an outstanding goal surviving several Penalty Corners before the referee finally signalled full time: 2 - 1 to Pinehurst.

During the awards ceremony, Gabrielle Tomoana was awarded Most Valuable Player for their team.

Final score sheet for Pinehurst: 6 matches, 29 goals for, 3 against, 1 trophy and the victory in the Rosemary O'Brien Cup tournament entitling the team an entry to a tier two tournament for 2011.

Congratulations Pinehurst Girls' First XI.
