Senior College 1st XI Girls Football Tournament

Author -  Shannon Sager

During week 7, the 1st XI Girls Football Team competed in the National Tournament week for the first time, competing for the Maurice Hulme Cup. The tournament took place in Hamilton with twenty three other teams from around the North Island .
It was an intense, physically demanding week with eight games in five days. Due to the bad weather ,many games were in difficult conditions, however the girls never gave up no matter what. We started the tournament well scoring the first goal against Matamata College. Unfortunately we let our guard down and lost 1 – 3. We bounced back in our second game with a comprehensive win over Aotea College. Games three and four were key to our progression in the tournament, and against strong opposition in Western Heights High School and Karamu College. Despite dominating for large parts of both games we did not come away with the results required. This left us our last pool game against Wanganui Girls High School which we won convincingly. Our lack of good fortune carried through t the play offs where we lost our semi-final and then our final match against St Paul’s Collegiate leaving us to finsh in 16th place.
Although the result was not what we had hoped for, we had an amazing week. We all learned valuable lessons, took personal responsibility and most importantly bonded as a team. A special mention to Mr Verryt, Clive Herbert and Mrs Augustin who took the time to travel down to hamilton with us.
Overall it was wonderful and memorable experience.
