Pinehurst Team Success at North Island Secondary Schools Athletics

Author -  Shannon Sager

Pinehurst competed in the North Island Secondary Schools Athletics championships in Masterton last weekend.
Matt Watson placed 1st in the Intermediate Boys hurdles, adding the North Island title to the NZ u/18 title he won last weekend in Wellington. This was despite Matt being ill and not training all week - a great display of determination.
Georgie Glover-Clark’s placed 2nd in the Senior Girls 4 x 100m relay, 3rd in the Triple Jump, an unlucky 4th in the 100m hurdles and 6th = in the high jump all in spite of the fact she was recently injured. Georgie is displaying great all-round talent.
Nico van Wijk dramatically improved his personal best times over the weekend to finish 3rd in the Intermediate Boys hurdles. Nico gained this placing through a combination of fortitude and hard training.
Georgia Hughes completed a great rise through the ranks of athletics to finish 6th in the final of the Junior Girls 70m hurdles. Georgia has only been learning how to hurdle over the last month.
Nick Hailes (in picture) will be in the Intermediate Boys grade again next year and found the going tough to finish 12th in the Shot and 13th in the Discus.
Stella Pearless was also selected for the team but had to with draw through injury. This was a great pity as she had great chances to place or win in both the Intermediate Girls 400m and 800m. Stella will have another year in the same grade next year.
