HOCKEY 1ST XI Match V

The late start of the match against Wentworth (4th June 2014) meant that our team were settled, and serendipitously prepared to beat this team. Pinehurst were ready to run hard to contain these boys and play some tough hockey. The cool evening breeze drifted across the neighbouring paddocks as the dark, murky winter evening swallowed the stray light from the glistening flood lights which bathed the venue in sharp silver shafts of xenon beams.
The Wentworth team were similar in stature and ability, but appeared not to be so keen to exert their influence over the Pinehurst crew. Our fellows had become a far tighter unit over the preceding weeks and their skill levels, communication and aggressive tendencies had merged together to produce a far better standard of hockey than we had seen in previous encounters. Wentworth were generally kept in their place and it looked as if the winners would be Pinehurst, but by half time neither team had scored. Time and time again Pinehurst had entered the circle but their finish lacked class and all the shots had been wide or so poorly struck that the ball trickled slower than a runny nose on a rainy Tuesday morning. The supporters grew frustrated as Pinehurst failed to capitalize on their opportunities.
In the second half Wentworth had some very good chances that they squandered. Hamish and Alasdair (brains and brawn) made some fine incursions into enemy territory but once again the finish lacked clout and no goals appeared. The weather was kind and so was the score. Pinehurst were not robbed, but at nil; nil, they had not obtained the score that they deserved.
Earlier wins however had helped and the team were through to the final. The next match will be the final and the old foe (Westlake) will be furtively faced and (hopefully) decisively defeated.

Final score: Pinehurst 0 Wentworth 0.
