Conclusions from School Wide Sports Review

1.       Football and Rugby are played through clubs in Year 1 – 8.  We direct students to join their local clubs.  For Mid Bays competitions, Intermediate Zone Days and AIMS Games, we trial players, select the best teams and enter competitions only after sound coaching and preparation with the goal of winning fairly. Netball, Hockey and Basketball are played through school terms in Year 1 – 8.

2.       We need to consider paying for experienced coaches for our top collegiate teams, underpinned by high performance coaching for Year 9 – 13 using the development squad concept with the four corners of sport approach.  This year, we began our coaching for Coaches Programme, supported by Greater Auckland Coaching Unit (GACU).

3.       We need to continually reinforce appropriate side line behaviour so our students are encouraged to participate in a positive constructive environment.  Negative and destructive comments about players or officials will be actively discouraged.

4.       We need to reinforce that the deadline for applications is just that. Once signed in, full participation is required for the entire season.  We need our parents to help reinforce this.  Giving up part way through the season is not acceptable.

5.       We need to continually reinforce with parents that competitions require teams to have their best players on the field, and that players in the squad support their team, train with them and fully understanding the game plan.  This is also part of their development.

6.       We will be encouraging students, parents and teachers to positively support our Pinehurst teams from the side-line, especially in our home games and finals.

7.       Next year, we will be publishing to Year 9 – 13 students the teams they may apply for. Teams will be set well before games start which will allow for pres-season coaching and development.
