Duke of Edinburgh Award
The Young New Zealander’s Challenge is the New Zealand title for The Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme. It is a non-competitive programme of leisure activities for young people aged 14-25, which enables individuals to develop a series of personal challenges. The award comprises of four sections: Service, Skills, Expeditions and Physical Recreation.
At Pinehurst we enrol each Year 10 student in the programme. At the beginning of the school year the Year 10 students attend a camp at which they receive outdoors and first aid training from Peak Performance Solutions LTD, before completing a two day tramp. The students are then encouraged to continue and complete their award during their time at Pinehurst. Many choose to continue to the Silver and even Gold levels of The Duke of Edinburgh Award, which gives them a great sense of achievement, in addition to being a prestigious qualification, widely recognized by universities and employers alike.
